U.S. Steel Kosice, Slovakia, has upgraded their welding equipment to increase productivity and improved weld quality.
The American steel producer, which employs 16000 people, is now producing spiral pipes from coils, in grades up to grade X-70. Theses pipes are mainly used for water, sewage, oil and gas pipelines.
The pipe dimensions range from 406-1420 mm in diameter with a wall thickness of 5,0-12,5 mm and in lengths of 8,0-18,0 meters.
After a long and serious selection process, ESAB was awarded the contract for the upgrading of the mill, which included new power sources and control systems for three stations, one strip joining station and both internal and external multiple wire welding stations. The control room was also upgraded to allow accurate welding data to be stored. As a result of the new installations productivity has increased by 20 percent.
"The modernization of our welding process has given us a system with 100 percent reliability. At the same time we have gained a partner, in ESAB, capable of providing fast service, technical support and advice in the selection of equipment, which will allow us to continue our process development", says Tibor Kovács, Production and Technical Manager at U.S. Steel Kosice.
U.S. Steel also use ESAB´s consumables in the welding process to keep up with the high quality demands of their customers.
