ESAB install automated welding equipment for Russian pipe mill

ESAB Laxå Sweden have received a major contract to supply the latest state-of-the-art automated line pipe welding equipment for Vyksa Steel Works, the largest U&O pipe mill in Russia.

Vyksa and ESAB go back a long time and this is the 5th large order from Vyksa. Vyksa is one of the oldest centers of metallurgic industry in Russia founded in 1757 and is one of the leaders in CIS metallurgy in producing railroad wheels and steel electric welded pipes and were granted API licenses in 1994. This is an upgrade of their older equipment and has a value of 5.2 MEUR including consumables.

The deal is a result of integrated engineering from other global industrial segments brought together for pipe mills as well as good teamwork within the pipe mill segment. A group of experienced people totally dedicated to pipe mills have provided the customers with engineered new or retrofit solutions, welding procedures and a complete line of welding consumables. Vyksa will have complete process control and a totally customized solution.

Vyksa's demand for the Sakhalin 1 project is 970 tonnes OK Flux 10.74, a low weld profile welding flux, in 1000 kg BigBags. This is for production of 36,000 tonnes 610 mm pipe of grade X-65 with a wall thickness of 12 mm, for which Exxon is the contractor.

The Sakhalin 2 project started up in November 2003 to produce an additional 50000 tonnes contracted by the Sakhalin Energy group.
